RECORD ATTENDANCE AT NLCS
13th May 2009
This year’s Baseball National League Championship Series (NLCS) saw the highest-ever attendances recorded at the series with a total of 251 spectators attending the three games.
Game 1 in Marsa saw only 20 spectators turn out as the favorites Mellieha Northenders and the Mustangs BC took to the field. As the game progressed it quickly became apparent that a surprise was on store as the Mustangs fought hard and recovered lost ground until they eventually won in the final inning. This led to a lot of interest in Game 2, with the Mellieha team taking advantage and promoting the game heavily in their home town, the venue for games 2 and 3.
At the start of Game 2 it was immediately apparent that a MABS record would be broken when 126 people attended the game. Part of the game was also broadcast on PBS that afternoon. With Mellieha winning Game 2, the series then went to Game 3 where a further 105 spectators were counted.
The last record was held by the Gozo Tornadoes in 2002 who had won Game 1 versus the Mustangs in Marsa, then attracted a crowd of 90 spectators at the Gozo Stadium only to lose Game 2. The 2002 series attracted an estimated crowd of 140 spectators.
